TUG ultrasound is used in the United States legally, but only at the Beach Eye Medical Group, Long Beach office. I am attempting to find how that is different from the EyeTechCare ultrasound used regularly in France for glaucoma including at the prestigious Parisian hospital 1520.
TUG is a low power, low frequency ultrasound which is used with only a topical anesthetic. It has been shown to have an effect on IOP in patients at all levels of glaucoma. It, like other therapies, has more effect on higher IOP's. The French EyeTechCare is designed for more advanced glaucoma. If we think of glaucoma as a plumbing problem with a sink that is clogged, the EyeTechCare decreases the water coming into the sink by turning down the faucet (decreasing inflow) The TUG treatment works on outflow by removing the debris clogging the sink (increasing outflow) The EyeTechCare device is typically used in a hospital facility or operating room, whereas the TUG device is a lower power ultrasound can be used in an exam chair.
