Those of you who have tried infrared light therapy, do you have any suggestions regarding what you consider the best brand and type of red light therapy products you have used? Do you feel the red light therapy contributed to improved eye sight and healing of the optic nerve?

Thank you for your question regarding red light therapy (RLT) and optic nerve health. Recent studies have explored the potential benefits of photobiomodulation (PBM) in ophthalmology, including its effects on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and optic nerve health.

A 2021 review published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences by Zhu et al. provides compelling evidence on how PBMT using 600–1000nm light can improve mitochondrial health, boost cerebral blood flow, and offer neuroprotective benefits without known adverse effects. The authors highlight the therapy’s potential for visual and neurological conditions by emphasizing its cellular and molecular mechanisms, including protection against retinal degeneration, reduction of inflammation, and enhancement of contrast sensitivity and visual acuity Zhu et al., 2021, PMCID: PMC7738953.

A 2024 review in Frontiers in Ophthalmology discusses the preclinical and clinical evidence of PBM in ophthalmology, highlighting its potential in managing ocular conditions. Another study published in Eye in 2024 explores the use of near-infrared/red light therapy as a potential countermeasure for mitochondrial dysfunction in spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), which shares similarities with glaucoma in terms of optic nerve involvement.

This early-stage research shows promise. If you're interested, consider learning more from reputable sources, patient communities, or specialists familiar with emerging therapies. Being proactive helps you become your own best advocate.

For those interested in exploring red light therapy devices, here is the device most FitEyes members have been using:

eyepower red • eyepower

There's also one other similar product FitEyes members have mentioned, but it costs four times as much.

Regarding:

Do you feel the red light therapy contributed to improved eye sight and healing of the optic nerve?

Myself, and others who have commented, are generally of the opinion that it is hard to ascertain any benefits. The effects, if any, seem to be very subtle. Other treatments, such as neuroprotective dietary supplements seem to produce more noticeable benefits. But the red light therapy glasses are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, so most of us use them in the hope that they are providing some benefits.
