I just heard back from my eye doctor about my use of mushroom tinctures, which were definitely lowering my eye pressure, but also lowering my blood pressure, She said to stop taking them. Too bad. Elle

Which mushrooms in particular lowered your IOP and BP and to what extent? Thanks! Diane

I second Diane's question. Please give the full ingredients of what you were taking. I further suggest that if you are currently using a combination of different mushrooms (and other ingredients) you might be able to use separate ingredients to get the desired IOP lowering effect without the BP-reducing side effect you mentioned.

As an alternative, you could try PEAmium to lower your IOP. Many FitEyes members are getting good results with it for reducing IOP. However, PEAmium is not just for reducing IOP, it has other benefits that include reducing neuroinflammation, reducing joint pain and improving immune system response to viruses (such as the flu virus and possibly even COVID-19. (FSF Pharma has a clinical trial for COVID-19 and PEA.)

I have just started taking the PEAmium and am cautiously optimistic about it. I was taking 10-15 drops of three different mushrooms;, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Reishi. The last one in particular was especially helpful with my chronic insomnia. My eye pressure went down about 3 points sometimes a bit more; my resting heart rate was about 8-10 points lower, with much quicker recovery even after climbing stairs. I wasn't taking my blood pressure, just monitoring the resting heart rate. Hope that helps.

After reading this, I think I'm going to disagree with the advice of your doctor. When you area getting those kinds of benefits, how does it make sense to discontinue those supplements?

You originally said:

...but also lowering my blood pressure

Personally, after reading your additional messages, I suspect there is a possibility that somebody is jumping to conclusions and blaming these supplements for something they are not causing. Even if I'm wrong about that, my personal approach would be to continue with them and look into the low blood pressure issue more deeply. You may have to experiment a lot. You may have to try the three different mushrooms one at a time. You may have to add an adaptogenic supplement (like Paradise Herbs Imperial Adaptogen) for example. You may need a kidney / adrenal support supplement. I don't have enough info to know exactly what your solution will be, but I just do not see how stopping these well-regarded supplements that are clearly giving you impressive benefits is the smart approach.

And for that matter, I wonder whether using Curcumin, which also lowers blood pressure, would be equally contraindicated? Thoughts?

No, it would not be contraindicated in my opinion.

Once again, thank you Dave for your thoughtful response. I am also in the midst of Covid and it has been taking a long time to get rid of the symptoms, so there are extenuating circumstances. I will play around with it a bit more to see what the culprit is. Also within the last two months, have started meditating 2x a day so I guess I have several other variables to consider. I need to heal from the Covid first as I just don't have the bandwidth to be too aggressive with my personal testing.

There are studies using cordyceps cicadae to lower IOP and provide other beneficial effects for glaucoma. The rat study was impressive - a dramatic lowering after 28 days. I found a proposed human trial in Taiwan but didn't find any results - not sure if it happened yet. All the supplements I could find use cordyceps militaris or sinensis. I don't know if those would have the same effect. What do you think, Dave?

Thank you. I will make a new post about cordyceps.

I read that as well. The Cordyceps I am using is the militaris.

I will make a new post about Cordyceps after I do some additional research. It appears that more studies would be needed to determine exactly how the Cordycceps species may differ.

There were over 600 species described as Cordyceps, but then came the genus review by Sung, Hywel-Jones, Sung, Luangsa-ard, Shrestha and Spatafora in 2007 and Cordyceps was divided into Cordyceps, Ophiocordyceps, Elaphocordyceps and Metacordyceps. All Ophiocordyceps species including Ophiocordyceps sinensis were placed in the new family Ophiocordycipitaceae.

However, at this time I can share the following conclusion which indicates that the Cordyceps species we are interested in are all very similar:

Results:

Research conducted on Cordyceps cicadae over the past two decades have shown that it poses similar biological properties and chemical composition as Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris.

Conclusion:

There exists sufficient evidence that Cordyceps cicadae has medicinal benefits and contain bioactive compounds similar to those found on Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris.
